Harry Maguire Left Out of England World Cup Squad, ‘Shocked and Gutted’

Harry Maguire, the Manchester United defender, has been omitted from England’s squad for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The 33-year-old center back announced via social media on Thursday that he is not part of Thomas Tuchel’s roster, expressing he was “shocked and gutted” by the decision.

Thomas Tuchel is scheduled to officially announce his squad on Friday.

Maguire was a key figure in England’s run to the World Cup semifinals in 2018 and the final of the 2020 European Championship. He also played in the team that reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but missed Euro 2024 due to injury.

“I was confident I could’ve played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best,” he said.

Maguire received his first call-up under Tuchel in March after playing a role in reviving Manchester United’s season following the departure of former coach Ruben Amorim.

Before that, he had been excluded from the national team since September 2024.

Maguire has earned 66 caps for England and scored seven goals since his debut in 2017. His most recent appearance came in a 1-0 loss to Japan in March.

Once a mainstay under former manager Gareth Southgate, Maguire has slipped behind defenders such as Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa in the national team pecking order.
