As the World Cup approaches its kickoff day, the participating teams are finalizing their squads and planning their final weeks before the June 11 opener in Mexico.
With the majority of expanded rosters for the 48 teams announced, attention now shifts to traveling to the United States, Mexico and Canada for the last phase of friendlies and training sessions.
In the host nations, the tournament’s hospitality sector is putting finishing touches on base camps before teams arrive.
Here is what we know about World Cup base camps, training facilities and locations.
A base camp is the primary location chosen by each participant nation for pre-tournament training, acclimatization and as a home base during the group stage.
A base camp includes accommodation, practice fields, gyms, recovery facilities, performance evaluation centers and any other required amenities.
The three host nations hold advantages in climate acclimatization, home crowd support and fewer logistical hurdles over the 45 nations that must travel and adjust to local conditions.
All 48 teams have selected a base camp from the FIFA-approved catalogue to suit their requirements and group-stage fixture locations.
The locations are a mix of sports complexes, university facilities and luxury hotels.
These base camps will primarily be used until the group stage ends June 27.
The 32 teams advancing to the knockout rounds may extend their stay or move closer to their next match venue.
