James Roscoe, a British diplomat who served as interim ambassador in Washington after the dismissal of Peter Mandelson, has abruptly left his position, the Foreign Office confirmed Tuesday.
In a brief statement, a Foreign Office spokesman said: “James Roscoe has left his post.” No further explanation was provided for the departure of Roscoe, who had been deputy head of mission at the British embassy since 2022.
Roscoe was among candidates considered for the top diplomatic post following Mandelson’s removal over his ties to financier Jeffrey Epstein, convicted on child sex trafficking charges. The role ultimately went to Christian Turner.
As charge d’affaires to the United States, Roscoe played a key role in organizing President Donald Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom in September 2025.
More recently, as second-in-command at the embassy, he was involved in planning King Charles III’s state visit to the United States to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Before his Washington posting, Roscoe served as UK ambassador to the United Nations and previously as communications chief to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
He also served as chief press officer at 10 Downing Street under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
His earlier diplomatic postings included assignments at the United Nations, Sierra Leone, and Iraq.
