Democrats Release Belated 2024 Election Autopsy Report Amid Backlash

The Democratic National Committee has published a postmortem of the party's 2024 election defeat after an initial decision to withhold the document sparked an angry backlash.

DNC Chair Ken Martin released the report Thursday and apologized to party members angered by his earlier refusal to make the analysis public.

The report, authored by veteran strategist Paul Rivera, examines Kamala Harris's loss to Donald Trump and Democratic defeats in both chambers of Congress.

Martin initially declined to publish the report, citing a need to focus on this year's midterm elections and avoid reopening old wounds.

The decision triggered a crisis of confidence in Martin's leadership among senior Democrats and accusations that he was hiding the findings.

The report focuses on key demographics Harris lost, including Latinos, men, and rural voters, and compares her performance to other Democrats in state races like North Carolina Governor Josh Stein.

It also examines campaign spending and advertising, stressing the need to engage new voters rather than just broadcasting messages.

Notably, the autopsy omits the role of Joe Biden's age or U.S. support for Israel's war in Gaza, despite widespread polling on those issues.

Martin acknowledged the report's shortcomings, saying it "does not meet my standards [and] will not meet your standards," but added release was necessary for public trust.

"When I received the report late last year, it wasn't ready for primetime," Martin said, explaining that fixing it would require starting over entirely.

"In short, I didn't want to create a distraction. Ironically, in doing so, I ended up creating an even bigger distraction. And for that, I sincerely apologize," Martin said.

The 192-page document includes a disclaimer on each page stating it reflects only the author's views and that the DNC was not provided with underlying sourcing or data.

Sections are punctuated with qualifiers questioning sourcing, data accuracy, and lack of evidence.

One qualifier challenges the author's claim that the January 6 attack led to five deaths, stating it "contradicts public reporting," although five people died within 36 hours of the attack and four police officers later died by suicide.
