Fast-Growing Southern California Brush Fire Prompts Evacuations

A rapidly expanding brush fire erupted Monday morning in Southern California, triggering mandatory evacuation orders and damaging at least one residence.

The fire was first reported shortly after 10 a.m. in Simi Valley, a city in Ventura County approximately 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

By just before noon, the blaze had consumed more than 180 acres, according to Scott Dettorre, a spokesperson for the Ventura County Fire Department.

Aerial footage from local television stations showed at least one home engulfed in flames. Fire officials did not provide an exact number of structures damaged. Multiple helicopters were seen conducting water drops over the fire, while thick gray smoke blanketed the neighborhood.

Authorities ordered evacuations for residents in the southern portion of Simi Valley, a city with a population exceeding 125,000.

Fire crews worked urgently to prevent the flames from advancing down slopes into the suburban neighborhoods of Thousand Oaks.

The National Weather Service issued an advisory warning of winds between 20 and 30 mph for the area, in effect until 3 p.m.
