Harry Maguire ‘shocked and gutted’ after missing England World Cup squad

Harry Maguire announced Thursday that he has been omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup, a decision the Manchester United defender described as leaving him ‘shocked and gutted.’ Tuchel is scheduled to name his 26-man roster Friday morning at Wembley.

Maguire, 33, has performed strongly for United since Michael Carrick took over as head coach in mid-January and earned a call-up for England’s March friendlies. He started against Uruguay and came on as a late substitute against Japan, posing a threat on set pieces.

Tuchel opted to prioritize other defenders over Maguire. ‘I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,’ Maguire wrote on social media. ‘I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer.’
