Hull KR Crush Wigan in One-Sided Challenge Cup Final Warm-Up

Hull KR inflicted a heavy defeat on a severely weakened Wigan side in a Challenge Cup final tune-up, exposing a stark contrast in preparation strategies between the two teams.

Wigan coach Matt Peet rested nearly his entire cup final squad, handing out eight debuts and fielding only three players over 23, resulting in a 58-4 loss that ranks among the Warriors’ worst defeats.

Willie Peters’ Hull KR side ran in 11 tries, leading 42-0 by halftime, with four more scores after the break. “We approached this game to get two points, and we got that,” Peters said, adding that they achieved their aim of winning at home.

Mikey Lewis scored a hat-trick within the first 20 minutes, with Tom Davies also touching down to make it 22-0 quickly. Jez Litten, Jai Whitbread, and Rhyse Martin added further tries against a young Wigan lineup unable to match the champions’ intensity.

Wigan justified their selection by citing key players on the verge of disciplinary bans or carrying injuries that could have ruled them out of the final if they played.

Peet defended his decision: “I’ve always said I’ll do it with individuals in mind. There’s no right or wrong answer. You’ve got to do what’s best for your players.”

The Rugby Football League confirmed they contacted Wigan over their squad selection but said no ramifications would follow. The impact on sponsors and potential broadcast partners remains unclear.

Wigan’s youngsters showed effort, with Nathan Lowe scoring a long-range try early in the second half, but it was a brief respite as Dean Hadley, Noah Booth, Sam Luckley, and Jack Broadbent also crossed for Hull KR.

The two teams will meet again at Wembley in nine days, where the effectiveness of each approach will be tested. For Super League, however, the night was one the competition will want to forget.
