Xabi Alonso’s Appointment Signals Chelsea’s Shift Toward Manager Authority

Xabi Alonso’s first challenge as Chelsea’s new manager will be to lift morale and align players, fans, and owners after a disappointing season.

Many question why Alonso accepted a four-year deal given his previous experience with player power at Real Madrid and the perception that Chelsea is unmanageable. The size of the financial package remains unclear.

Alonso becomes the sixth permanent manager since BlueCo’s takeover in 2022. He cannot claim ignorance of the risks, but his self-belief allows him to focus on the positive aspects. The 44-year-old, still bruised from his unhappy spell at Madrid, is ready to make the leap.

Alonso’s appointment is a coup for Chelsea, the most prestigious under current ownership. BlueCo had tracked him for four years, impressed by his work at Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the team to the Bundesliga title in 2024, defeating Bayern Munich.

The dream is now reality. Alonso’s meeting with Chelsea’s leadership in London established an easy rapport. His appointment signals a policy shift: he takes the title of manager rather than head coach, a change initiated by Chelsea. They see him as a leader capable of shaping culture. Alonso spoke about wanting to sign and create ‘mentality monsters,’ a concept the club embraced.

Players will want to join Alonso. Chelsea, likely missing Champions League qualification for the third time in four seasons, may have underestimated the manager’s influence. The infamous comment from a director about no statistical link between managers and results needs to be discarded.

The flaw in that theory is the unquantifiable impact of elite managers. Chelsea now recognizes the value of aura. Their skepticism was dispelled after Liam Rosenior was overwhelmed by the role before his sacking last month.

There is acknowledgment of mistakes over four years. While there was no formal policy to sign only young players, recruitment strategy will become more flexible by age. Alonso agrees Chelsea must bring in experienced players this summer.

Yet this does not require a drastic rebuild. The primary reason for Chelsea’s season collapse was Enzo Maresca’s departure on New Year’s Day. Until then, the club had been progressing. They remain world champions.

Alonso sees a squad he can mold. With targeted improvements—a world-class goalkeeper, sharper wingers, consistent central defense, and more support for striker João Pedro—Chelsea can compete with top teams.

To close the gap, Chelsea needs stability. This begins by empowering the manager. It does not mean abandoning their model, and contrary to speculation, Alonso will not have total control.

Instead, Chelsea recognizes Alonso’s stature requires him to have significant say in the club’s future. Building a team of ‘mentality monsters’ only works if the manager is empowered.
